The founder and inspiration of Akanishta Kadampa Buddhist Centre is the world-renowned Buddhist meditation master and scholar Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche. Forty years ago Venerable Geshe- la, as he is affectionately known, accepted an invitation to come to the west to teach Buddhist meditation to people living in today’s busy world.
With profound personal experience of Buddha’s teachings and remarkable insight into the needs of contemporary society he introduced the practices of modern Buddhism, from extremely practical methods to solve our human problems and find happiness in our daily life to sublime meditations that lead to the attainment of enlightenment through the practice of Mahamudra.
Born in Tibet in 1931 and ordained a Buddhist monk at the age of eight, he studied Buddhism deeply at Sera-Je, Ngamring Jampaling and Tashi Lhunpo monasteries under many highly qualified Teachers, in particular Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche . After leaving Tibet in 1959, he spent the next eighteen years mainly emphasising meditation retreat in various locations in the Himalayan region and northern India.
Over the last forty years, besides giving thousands of teachings and granting all the essential Tantric empowerments Venerable Geshe-la, has worked tirelessly to make the practices of modern Buddhism available to people throughout the world, creating a global infrastructure to support their growth and development both now and in the future.
Through his selfless dedication this humble monk has touched the hearts of countless people around the world and helped them to discover a blissful journey to lasting happiness and inner peace.

Inaugurated the annual International and National Festivals and Dharma Celebrations.
Written 22 extremely clear and practical books on modern Buddhism and meditation, which have been translated into 17 languages, and also many ritual sadhanas, or prayers for meditation.
Established meditation retreat facilities throughout the world, including three International Retreat Centres: Tharpaland IRC, Kailash IRC and Menorca IRC.
Developed the three core study and meditation programmes of modern Buddhism, and special programmes to train qualified Teachers – creating thousands of Teachers of modern Buddhism who teach in over forty languages.
Granted ordination to thousands of fortunate students around the world.
Established the Kadampa Art Studio to distribute qualified Kadampa statues to many countries worldwide.
Granted the transmission of the Oral Instructions of Mahamudra, the supreme uncommon instructions for attaining enlightenment in this life.
Founded the International Temples Project, for World Peace, to create a modern Buddhist temple in every major city of the world.
